Celebrating our 75th Anniversary on one of the world’s greatest stages.
The Columbus Symphony’s 75th Anniversary season continues with a landmark program showcasing some of the most compelling voices in contemporary classical music alongside one of the repertoire’s greatest symphonic masterpieces.
Under the direction of Rossen Milanov, the Symphony presents the world premiere of The Mysteries, a newly commissioned work by acclaimed American composer Gregory Spears. One of the most sought-after composers of his generation, Spears has emerged as a defining voice in contemporary music, making this Columbus premiere a significant artistic milestone before the work travels to New York.
Acclaimed bass-baritone Davóne Tines joins the Symphony for his Concerto No. 2: ANTHEM, a powerful and thought-provoking work that reimagines the national anthem and other foundational American songs. Created in collaboration with composers Michael Schachter, Caroline Shaw, and Tyshawn Sorey, and poet Mahogany L. Browne, the piece has garnered national attention since its premiere by the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl and subsequent performances by leading ensembles including the BBC Symphony Orchestra at London’s Barbican Centre and the New World Symphony in Miami Beach. Following its Columbus performances, ANTHEM will receive its New York City premiere at Carnegie Hall.

Gregory Spears is acclaimed for his distinctive blend of romanticism, minimalism, and early music influences, which seeks to collapse layers of history into one moment, our own.

This “next generation leader” (Time magazine) is a path-breaking artist at the intersection of many histories, cultures, and aesthetics. His work blends opera, spirituals, gospel, and anthems as a means to tell a deeply personal story of perseverance and human connection.

Tchaikovsky’s powerful Fifth Symphony, with its famous “fate” motif, begins in the depths of despair, then twists and turns towards an exciting, triumphal march.
