SUMMARY:Beethoven\, Schumann\, & Brahms
DESCRIPTION:Rossen Milanov\, conductor\nMaxim Lando\, piano \nBeethoven: Egmont Overture\nSchumann: Symphony No. 4\nBrahms: Piano Concerto No. 1 \nMusical brilliance abounds in this concert featuring works by three prominent composers from the Classical and Romantic eras. Beethoven’s overture to Egmont is part of the incidental music he composed for the play by Goethe. It portrays in a brilliant and powerful way the ideas of oppression\, struggle\, and freedom. Schumann’s music captures the imagination with its romantic passion and energy\, while offering an innovative formal design where all the movements of the Symphony are linked together. \nRising-star pianist Maxim Lando returns to the Columbus Symphony with Brahms’ virtuosic First Piano Concerto\, a work that poses extraordinary demands on the soloist and is filled with lush melodies and dramatic contrasts. \nEnjoy a free pre-concert talk at 6:30PM on Friday and at 2PM on Saturday that dives into the music you’ll hear! There is no assigned seating during the pre-concert talks. \nThis concert is dedicated to the memory of Mark and Annie Bates by their loving family: Deborah\, Hiroshi\, Ken\, Bryan\, and Emily Yoshino. \nThe Columbus Symphony uses Steinway Pianos generously furnished by Graves Piano.\nMr. Lando appears by arrangement of Arabella Arts.

SUMMARY:La traviata
DESCRIPTION:A co-production with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra\, CAPA\, and Opera Columbus. \nComposed by Giuseppe Verdi and inspired by the Alexandre Dumas fils play La Dame aux camélias\, La traviata unfolds as a poignant tragedy. However\, social pressures and Alfredo’s disapproving father compel her to renounce their love for the sake of his family’s reputation. Overcome by heartbreak and illness\, Violetta ultimately finds her way back to Alfredo\, but their reconciliation comes too late—she dies in his arms\, underscoring the opera’s powerful themes of love\, sacrifice\, and societal judgment. \nRossen Milanov\, conductor \nAubry Ballarò as Violetta Valery\nJohn Bellemer as Alfredo Germont\nRobert Kerr as Giorgio Germont\nBenjamin Bunsold as Gastone de Letorieres\nBrandon Whitish as Baron Douphol\nArtega Wright as Marchese D’Obigny + Grenville\nHilary Ginther as Flora Bervoix\nHannah Bullock as Annina \nAudio Description\, Touch Tour\, and Braille Programs are available at the Sunday performance.\nThis production will be performed in Italian with English captions.

SUMMARY:Verdi's Requiem

From the terrifying Dies irae\, with its swirling strings and thunderous bass drum (a favorite of the Ohio State University Marching Band)\, to the achingly beautiful Lacrimosa and the whispered opening that rises from near silence\, the Requiem blends theatricality with profound reflection. Hear the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and Chorus\, joined by a quartet of exceptional guest soloists\, bring to life this masterpiece by the great Italian opera composer.

DESCRIPTION:SEASON SUBSCIPTIONS AVAILABLE NOW\nSINGLE TICKETS ON SALE MAY 4\n \nJanuary 15 & 16 | 7:30PM\nOhio Theatre  \nRossen Milanov\, conductor\nDmitry Shishkin\, piano  \nPaola Prestini: My Brilliant Friend: Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay\nProkofiev: Concerto No. 3 in C Major for Piano and Orchestra\, Op. 26\nShostakovich: Symphony No. 5 in D Minor\, Op. 47  \nMusic Director Rossen Milanov brings back the Winter Music Festival with stunning works by Soviet-era masters to warm up a cold January night. The “electrifying and flamboyant” Dmitry Shishkin performs Prokofiev’s witty Third Piano Concerto\, called “the most beautiful modern concerto for piano” when it premiered in 1921. Shostakovich’s popular Fifth Symphony begins with an icy and mysterious theme in the first movement and ends with a powerful and (seemingly) triumphant D-major finale. The concert opens with a new co-commissioned work by Paola Prestini\, a composer “known for pushing the boundaries of classical music” (Wall Street Journal) with music that is “otherworldly…outright gorgeous” (New York Times).

SUMMARY:Strauss & Dvořák
DESCRIPTION:SEASON SUBSCRIPTIONS AVAILABLE NOW\nSINGLE TICKETS ON SALE MAY 4\n \nJanuary 21 | 7:30PM\nSouthern Theatre  \nElias Miller\, conductor \nR. Strauss: Suite in B-flat Major for Thirteen Wind Instruments\, Op. 4\nSam Wu: Along the Pacific Flyway\nDvořák: Serenade in D Minor\, Op. 44 \nJoin Assistant Conductor Elias Miller for a charming chamber music performance. Dvořák’s Serenade for Winds\, reminiscent of his Slavonic Dances\, evokes the atmosphere of an old-World castle. Richard Strauss’s intimate suite for thirteen wind instruments is an early work from the master who would become known for epic tone poems and operas. Rising star composer Sam Wu writes music that “abounds in delicate colours\, wisps of sound and sylvan textures” (Gramophone).

Vivaldi’s “La Follia” Sonata is based on one of the oldest and most famous European musical themes\, while his stormy “La tempesta di mare” concerto hails from the same series as the famous Four Seasons — which contemporary composer Max Richter has recomposed to critical and popular acclaim. Argentine composer Osvaldo Golijov’s Tenebrae is inspired by the contrast between human violence and cosmic beauty.

Virtuoso flautist Jasmine Choi\, with a tone “glowing like gold [that] resonates like pearls” (Nikkei Daily Newspaper) performs the great Danish composer Carl Nielsen’s Flute Concerto before the Columbus Symphony ends the evening with two popular 20th-century works: Samuel Barber’s heart-rending Adagio for Strings has become synonymous with moments of national reflection and catharsis\, while Edward Elgar’s “Enigma Variations” is a musical cryptogram depicting the composer’s inner circle\, including the elegantly moving “Nimrod.”
