2022-23 Musician Picks

JOANNA FRANKEL

Hi, my name is Joanna, and I'm the concertmaster for the Columbus Symphony.

We're really excited about all the things coming up in the new year. For me especially, I'm really excited about our Beethoven, Mozart, and Haydn concert. It's coming up in the spring. The thing that I'm interested in that concert is kind of the linear quality of the music. You'll hear the high end, then you'll hear the Mozart and the Beethoven, but it'll be in the reverse order. So it'll kind of be like you'll be hearing the future and then going backward in terms of composition. You'll be able to hear really the way music evolved in the abstract, but also really beautiful way. Some of these pieces are gems that don't get played very often. So it's a really wonderful way to really acquaint yourself with those period works. And it's really fun for us since we don't get to play a little bit more intimate music all that often, so that'll be really wonderful.

Another concert that I'm really excited about is Aaron Deal. Aaron Deal is a crossover jazz pianist who's coming to do the Ellington Nutcracker suite while we also do selections from Nutcracker suite. I think it's really important these days to understand that classical music has a really storied history, but classical music also has a future. Classical music goes in lots, and lots of different directions, especially with young performers, and Aaron Deal is one of those performers who's really taking it there. So, I really hope to see you at those concerts and am really excited to bring you more.

Beethoven, Mozart, & Haydn

Rossen Milanov, Conductor

January 20 & 21, 2023 | 7:30pm
January 22, 2023 | 2pm

This delightful concert will showcase three composers from the classical period who changed music forever. Leonore 3 Overture is the third of four overtures Beethoven wrote for his only opera, Fidelio. Mozart's ‘Linz’ Symphony, written in Vienna at the height of his career, is light and joyous. And Haydn’s ‘Military’ Symphony features a rarity in music from the classical period – percussion, which, combined with the trumpets, create the fanfare, drama, and excitement of military bands.
