SUMMARY:Appalachian Spring
DESCRIPTION:Thomas Wilkins\, Conductor\nYazid Gray\, baritone \nCopland: Appalachian Spring\nDaugherty: Letters from Lincoln\nDvořák: Symphony No. 8 \nGuest conductor Thomas Wilkins leads the orchestra in this captivating program. Copland’s sparkling Appalachian Spring is considered one of his finest works. Michael Daugherty’s Letters from Lincoln\, written in celebration of the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth\, features baritone soloist Yazid Gray. Dvořák’s poetic eighth symphony is full of charm\, inspired by the composer’s reflections on nature and life. \n“Each time I hear Dvorak Symphony No. 8 I’m transported back in time to my first experience with this symphony in Youth Orchestra at age 15. I am as enchanted with this joyful symphony now as I was then\, and I can’t wait to hear our fabulous principal flutist Niles Watson play the glorious flute solo of the 4th movement!” -Betsy Sturdevant\, Principal Bassoon\nFriday Coffee Dress \nObserve a working rehearsal as the musicians and conductor put the finishing touches on the weekend’s concert program on Friday\, February 28 at 10AM. Tickets are $18; coffee and donuts are included!

SUMMARY:All Mozart
DESCRIPTION:Rossen Milanov\, Conductor\nOrli Shaham\, piano \nMozart: Overture to Così fan tutte\nMozart: Piano Concerto No. 20\nMozart: Symphony No. 38 (“Prague”) \nJoin us for a celebration of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart\, featuring three of his mature works. Così fan tutte\, Mozart’s 1789 operatic romantic comedy\, begins with the delightful overture featured here. Described as “a first-rate Mozartean” by The Chicago Tribune\, pianist Orli Shaham showcases her expertise in Mozart’s virtuosic Piano Concerto No. 20. Completing this program is Symphony No. 38\, titled “Prague” for the location of its first performance. This extraordinary work demonstrates the sophisticated and complex symphonic writing of Mozart’s later years. \nThis performance is dedicated to the memory of Richard R. Murphey\, Jr.\, a longtime patron and supporter of the Columbus Symphony.

SUMMARY:Boléro
DESCRIPTION:Rossen Milanov\, Conductor\nLuis Biava\, cello \nHindemith: Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Weber\nBloch: Schelomo\nBizet: L’Arleseine\, Suite No. 1\nRavel: Boléro \nThe symphonic favorites featured on this program are what keep us coming back for more! Enjoy Ravel’s famous Boléro\, a mesmerizing showcase for many of the instruments of the orchestra. Hindemith’s brilliant Symphonic Metamorphosis is his most well-known output and was immediately embraced by the public upon its premiere in 1944. Bloch’s glorious Schelomo: “Hebrew Rhapsody\,” celebrates his Jewish heritage and features CSO principal cellist Luis Biava as soloist. Bizet’s exciting L’Arlésienne Suite No. 1 is inspired by the folk dances of Provence. \n“Boléro is a rite of passage for us percussionists. Exhilarating\, mesmerizing\, terrifying\, graceful\, relentless—these are just a few of the words that come to mind. It requires meticulous precision and steady control of one’s energy\, and by the time there’s a moment to appreciate what’s happening on stage\, it’s already over. It’s an emotional and musical journey that I look forward to sharing with my colleagues and Rossen!” – Cameron Leach\, Principal Percussion\n“Schelomo is such a special work not only because my teacher Leonard Rose played this piece incredibly and I was honored he taught it to me\, but it also has an amazing trajectory of Solomon’s story depicted in amazing color\, intensity\, triumph\, sadness\, and strength.” – Luis Biava\, principal cello
