SUMMARY:Britten War Requiem
DESCRIPTION:Rossen Milanov\, Conductor\nAbigail Rethwisch\, soprano\nJonathan Burton\, tenor\nAndrew Garland\, baritone\nColumbus Symphony Chorus\nStephen Caracciolo\, chorus director\nColumbus Children’s Choir\nJeanne Wohlgamuth\, director \nBritten: War Requiem \nExperience Benjamin Britten’s powerful War Requiem\, a testament to Britten’s lifelong pacifism. This massive work is scored for full symphony orchestra\, chamber orchestra\, three soloists\, choir\, boys’ choir\, and organ\, with texts from the Latin Requiem Mass and anti-war poems by Wilfred Owen\, an English soldier killed in battle during World War I. Written for the reconsecration of the Coventry Cathedral\, a monument destroyed during World War II\, the War Requiem was premiered in 1962. \nThis concert is dedicated to the memory of Mark and Annie Bates by their loving family: Deborah\, Hiroshi\, Ken\, Bryan\, and Emily Yoshino.\n\nIn honor of Memorial Day weekend\, the spirit of remembrance and reflection extends beyond the stage. Join us in the lobbies of the Ohio Theatre prior to the concert as we welcome the National Veterans Memorial and Museum (NVMM) for a special interactive experience. Throughout the evening\, explore powerful recorded poetry from veterans\, try on authentic military gear\, and take part in meaningful family-friendly activities like writing letters to those who have served. With hands-on exhibits and special offers to visit the museum\, this collaboration invites audiences of all ages to engage with the stories and sacrifices behind the music.\n“Performing the War Requiem invites us all into a liminal space where we can consider peace through reconciliation as an alternative to going to battle within ourselves and with those around us.  Every time I hear these words from Wilfred Owen juxtaposed against the Mass for the Dead they convict me; ‘I am the enemy you killed\, my friend.’  What I hear is a call to action\, a reminder from the past that the future doesn’t need to come to that.  It is not too late to choose a different path as a society\, in our relationships\, and with our own self-actualization.” -Ernest Hoffman\, Columbus Symphony Chorus\, Tenor II

SUMMARY:Tchaikovsky Spectacular
DESCRIPTION:Rossen Milanov\, Conductor\nAubree Oliverson\, violin \nTchaikovsky: Prelude from The Queen of Spades\nTchaikovsky: Violin Concerto\nTchaikovsky: Symphony No. 6 (“Pathetique”) \nA master of drama and romance\, Tchaikovsky’s music transports us to his distinctive musical landscape. On this program are some of his most beloved works. Aubree Oliverson\, whose performances have been described as “powerful… brimming with confidence and joy” (Miami New Times) returns to Columbus with the exquisite Violin Concerto. The sixth symphony\, Tchaikovsky’s last\, is a passionate triumph from a composer at the pinnacle of his career. \nBefore the concert\, join us in the lobby for a vodka tasting with Columbus-based distillery Middle West Spirits. Sample three of their signature vodkas—Character\, Stone Fruit\, and Honey Vanilla Bean—while enjoying specially crafted cocktails including the Honey Vanilla Bean Shake Up and Cosmo! It’s the perfect prelude to a night of sweeping symphonies and bold flavors. \n“Some of my favorite pieces of music are Tchaikovsky’s symphonies\, and in particular his sixth symphony. The music is full of passion\, mixed emotions\, and pain. Tchaikovsky conducted the premier performance in Saint Petersburg on October 28\, 1893—nine days later he died from Cholera at the age of 53 from a glass of tainted water. This symphony for me represents a goodbye to a great man.” – Zoran Stoyanovich\, Violin

SUMMARY:Link Up! The Orchestra Moves
DESCRIPTION:Link Up guides students grades 3–5 and music teachers through a months-long exploration of orchestral repertoire supported by extensive\, freely-provided curriculum materials and online resources.  The program culminates in an inclusive performance\, at which students are invited to actively participate by playing recorder or string instrument\, singing and dancing along with the orchestra.  This year’s Link Up program\, The Orchestra Moves\, explores movement within music (melody\, rhythm\, and harmony)\, as well as how music moves those who experience it.  Through the Link Up repertoire\, curriculum activities and a culminating\, interactive symphony concert\, together we will discover how the orchestra moves! \n\nEducators interested in participating in this program will be required to attend a two-hour\, Professional Development Teacher Workshop.\nAll seats are $5 for students and chaperones (1 free chaperone ticket for every 20 students)\, including free digital concert resources and a Spotify concert playlist.\nNeed-based transportation grants are available through our Safelite Bee-thoven Express Bus Grant program.\n\n  \nPlease register your school group HERE! \n(YPC performances are for school groups only and are not public events.) \n  \n

SUMMARY:Bach & Brahms
DESCRIPTION:Rossen Milanov\, Conductor\nJoanna Frankel\, violin\nHugo Souza\, oboe \nTower: Duets\nBach: Concerto for Oboe and Violin in C Minor\nBrahms: Symphony No. 1 \nHear the CSO’s own talented musicians as soloists: concertmaster Joanna Frankel and principal oboist Hugo Souza perform Bach’s captivating C minor concerto for oboe and violin. Joan Tower’s Duets spotlights shifting pairs of instruments in duet configurations. Brahms’ first symphony famously took the composer twenty years to complete\, resulting in a work of stunning power and beauty\, cemented as a pillar in orchestral music. \n“As an oboist\, playing Bach’s music is always an enlightening experience. His compositions are deeply thoughtful and translate beautifully to any instrument. I am thrilled to perform this piece with Joanna Frankel\, Maestro Milanov\, and my dear colleagues in the Columbus Symphony. I cannot wait to share this wonderful work with our audience!” – Hugo Souza\, Principal Oboe

SUMMARY:Boléro
DESCRIPTION:Rossen Milanov\, Conductor\nLuis Biava\, cello \nHindemith: Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Weber\nBloch: Schelomo\nBizet: L’Arleseine\, Suite No. 1\nRavel: Boléro \nThe symphonic favorites featured on this program are what keep us coming back for more! Enjoy Ravel’s famous Boléro\, a mesmerizing showcase for many of the instruments of the orchestra. Hindemith’s brilliant Symphonic Metamorphosis is his most well-known output and was immediately embraced by the public upon its premiere in 1944. Bloch’s glorious Schelomo: “Hebrew Rhapsody\,” celebrates his Jewish heritage and features CSO principal cellist Luis Biava as soloist. Bizet’s exciting L’Arlésienne Suite No. 1 is inspired by the folk dances of Provence. \n“Boléro is a rite of passage for us percussionists. Exhilarating\, mesmerizing\, terrifying\, graceful\, relentless—these are just a few of the words that come to mind. It requires meticulous precision and steady control of one’s energy\, and by the time there’s a moment to appreciate what’s happening on stage\, it’s already over. It’s an emotional and musical journey that I look forward to sharing with my colleagues and Rossen!” – Cameron Leach\, Principal Percussion\n“Schelomo is such a special work not only because my teacher Leonard Rose played this piece incredibly and I was honored he taught it to me\, but it also has an amazing trajectory of Solomon’s story depicted in amazing color\, intensity\, triumph\, sadness\, and strength.” – Luis Biava\, principal cello

This extraordinary work demonstrates the sophisticated and complex symphonic writing of Mozart’s later years. \nThis performance is dedicated to the memory of Richard R.
