Young People's Concerts

Each year, thousands of students throughout the greater Columbus area participate in the Columbus Symphony’s Young People’s Concerts. Concerts are programmed at the Ohio Theatre and are thematically based and grade appropriate. Pre-concert materials are provided for teachers and students based on the Ohio Academic content standards. All seats are $5 and include pre-concert materials for students and lesson guide for teachers. Crawl, run, sneak, jump, walk to the Ohio Theatre to experience the music of the orchestra. Learn about rhythm, tempo, and dynamics as the Columbus Symphony performs pieces which demonstrate a variety of styles from Haydn to Sousa to Williams.

Open Your Ears

Framed by the children’s book, “What Charlie Heard: The Story of the American Composer Charles Ives” by Mordicai Gerstein, the concert and pre-concert teaching materials will introduce students to orchestral music by a variety of composers including Bach, Brahms, Copland, Rossini, Strauss, Mendelssohn, and Charles Ives.

Limited copies of the book are also available for sale. Order through the registration form.

LINK UP: The Orchestra Rocks!*

Rhythm is a universal element of music. Composers and musicians play with elements of musical time, creating patterns of sound and silence that are expressive and exciting. Through the Link Up repertoire, students explore rhythm, pulse, and groove as listeners, composers, and performers of music.
 *This program requires attendance at a professional development session on Thurs. Nov. 14, 4:30pm.
**To receive student hard copies of program materials, registration must be completed by Oct. 18.

Early registration for the Link Up concert must be completed by Friday, Oct. 18. After this date, only digital materials may be available.
