The Columbus Symphony has a number of volunteer support groups whose members generously contribute their time and talents to support an extensive schedule of concerts, community outreach activities, and education programs that serve over 52,000 children and adults each year. As a Columbus Symphony volunteer, you have the opportunity to work and learn in a variety of different behind-the-scene environments, from working with students in music education programs to raising funds at special benefit events. You also have the chance to meet other people along the way who share your love of symphonic music and your desire to make a difference in Columbus' cultural life. Our valued volunteers are critical in our continued efforts to achieve and maintain the mission of the Columbus Symphony.
Since 1951, the Women's Association of the Columbus Symphony (WACSO) has been an important component in the organization's fundraising efforts and educational programming. The women lead several educational initiatives, including the "Great Symphony Search," a series of Saturday morning classes for pre-schoolers and their parents, "Backstage at the Columbus Symphony," a comprehensive tour of the Ohio Theatre for student in grades 3 through 8 that includes an inside peek at the orchestra in rehearsal, and the "Young Musician's Competition," which provides an opportunity for students in grades 3-12 to perform for professional feedback. Additionally, WACSO members are involved in several fundraising projects, including an annual raffle, ornament sales, fashion shows, and special events. For more information on becoming a WACSO member, please contact Sandra Green at transit_girl@yahoo.com.
The Columbus Symphony League was founded in 1981 by a group of volunteers for the purpose of establishing a support group focusing on fundraising projects for the Symphony. The League is an important part of the Columbus Symphony's fundraising efforts, as it participates in year-round projects which have included the "Going Places" auction at the first Picnic with the Pops concert, concert sponsorships, fashion shows, social events, and the purchase of much-needed musical instruments and administrative supplies. For more information on becoming a League member, please contact Susan Berry at svberry@columbus.rr.com.
For 25 years, more than 800 volunteers have been largely responsible for the production and promotion of Picnic with the Pops and Popcorn Pops, our outdoor summer concert series that reaches an annual audience of more than 50,000 people. Both concert series run in June and July and are complimented with four Friday evening Popcorn Pops concerts designed especially for children. In addition, the volunteer council is responsible for a pre-concert raffle that contributes to the Symphony's education and outreach services. Volunteer recruitment begins in May, 2007, and further information can be found online at www.picnicwiththepops.com.
