Italian Impressionism

Accompanying a performance of 19th-century Italian or Italian-themed music will be a talk on artists of Italy known as the Macchiaioli (“spot painters”), often compared to the Impressionists of France because of their depictions of everyday modern life set in the open air, executed with loosely-brushed “spots” of pigment. Painted at a time before Italy was a unified country, certain of the Macchiaioli works carried nationalistic overtones, with references to both the glories of the Renaissance past and struggles of the politically tumultuous present.
