Harlem Renaissance

To complement a program of music that reflects the legacy of the Harlem Renaissance, art of from the CMA exhibition I Too Sing America: The Harlem Renaissance at 100 will be discussed, with emphasis on paintings and works that highlight the role of music in African-American life during the early 20th century. Images depicting musicians, dancers, and singers on stage, in churches, outdoors, and in nightclubs by artists such as Norman Lewis, Malvin Gray Johnson, and Aaron Douglas reflect the creative vitality of the groundbreaking movement now celebrating its 100th anniversary.
