Julia Rose

Julia Rose - Columbus Symphony Orchestra

Birthplace: Cedar Rapids, IA
Grew up: Cannon Falls, MN
Started playing: 1982 (at age 10)
Education: BM, University of Wisconsin
Began with CSO: 1997
Non-CSO Activities: Professional Mommy and amateur web designer
Favorite music: varies
In my iPod: music we’re performing in the CSO in the near future, Schumann- Dichterliebe sung by Fritz Wunderlich, The Beatles 1 Album, Van Halen’s Greatest Hits, David Archuleta’s Debut Album, etc.
Main Teachers: Douglas Hill
When not rehearsing or performing on stage with the CSO, I spend my time…
chasing after my son, designing websites, and (oh yeah) practicing the horn If I had not become a professional musician, I may have become a…scientist
To unwind, I listen to…silence
In the car, I listen to…the traffic report
My current ring tone is…set to vibrate
The last book I read was…ASP.net 3.5 for Dummies
Most people would be surprised to learn that…I have a twin sister (we’re not identical)
The craziest thing I have ever done is…driven a car through the front window of the local ice cream shop in my hometown.  It was a manual transmission, and I stepped on the clutch instead of the brake.  I was in my twin sister’s car.
My dream is…that my alarm will stop ringing and I can go back to sleep!
The non-musical accomplishment that I am most proud of is…my son.
What is your guilty pleasure?  Eating a Butterburger and a large bowl of chocolate custard at Culver’s
My favorite vacation is…Barcelona, Spain.
The last movie I saw was…Gran Torino
To prepare for a performance, I…take a nap, then warm up thoroughly and practice the “hard licks”
If I could choose to play another instrument, it would be the…concertina.  I would want to be the next Karl Hartwich and perform at polka festivals around the world.
I also play the…stereo
My most embarrassing musical moment was…I’m a horn player, OK?  How can I possibly choose?
An extremely positive musical experience I have had was…performing in Carnegie Hall under the late conductor Sir Georg Solti.
A profound experience, musical or otherwise, that has shaped or deeply influenced my approach to music would be…studying with hornist John Zirbel of the Montreal Symphony.
If I could spend a day with any composer, if would be…Mozart
